Our Show
Formal Dress Optional has been performing Rocky Horror at Newark's Cinema
Center 3 F&G movie theater for the past five years. It is a unique experience
that will delight, confuse and probably offend all who attend. The movie
itself is rated 'R' by the MPAA however, due to its cult following, regular
audience members and members of the cast enjoy adding their own dialogue and
performances to upgrade the experience for more adult-themed fun.
"The Rocky Horror Picture Show" when viewed in a movie theater at a
traditional midnight showing is an audience participation film. Therefore you
should be prepared for your fellow movie-goers to shout over the original
dialogue, yell profanities randomly, throw pre-approved props at each other
(and you!), and generally have a good time. You should also be aware that it
inspires both men and women to parade around in lingerie and openly display
their sexuality. That said, it is strongly recommended that if you are
politically correct, easily offended or lack a good sense of humor and are
incapable of laughing at yourself, you should NOT attend our live show, and
for our sakes, just stay as far away from us as possible.
If you haven't been scared away yet, there are a couple of things to know
before attending your first show. People who have never seen a live
performance of Rocky Horror are referred to as 'virgins.' All virgins will be
marked on their forehead with red lipstick. Don't worry: it isn't a target for
people to throw stuff at you and it does wash off. It's simply a way for us to
know that it's your first time and request that you participate in some pre-
show fun if you are eighteen or older. When the movie is over, you can go
home, wash your face and start thinking of ways to trick your other 'virgin'
friends into attending the show so you can laugh at them.
The Rules
As liberal as we like to be, there are a few rules that must be followed for
the purposes of safety and state and federal law. These are:
1. You must be at least 17 years of age to watch this movie
at our theater. If you are not 17 years of age, you will need to use our
permission slip. See rule 3.
2. You must show VALID ID at the door. Valid ID means some
form of identification with your date of birth clearly printed on it. There
will be absolutely no exceptions to this rule. Don't show up with your high
school ID expecting to get in.
3. If you are under the age of 17, you may download and
print our permission form for your parent or guardian to fill out and sign,
stating that it's ok with them if you come watch the show. This permission
form must be submitted to our theater manager no later than one week
before you come to see the show. This is to allow our management to contact
your parent or guardian to make sure everything is in order. If your form is
submitted less than a week before you want to come see the show, we can make
no guarantees that you will be allowed in to see the movie on the next
Saturday night.
4. Do not throw anything at the cast or the screen. The
cast will be attempting to shadow-act the movie in front of the screen and
we can't do this if we're trying to dodge flying toast. The movie screen is
extremely expensive and we don't want it to get broken.
5. No fire or explosives.
6. No sex or nudity. If you would like to come to the
theater in a Rocky costume or lingerie we certainly aren't going to stop you,
but we won't tolerate sex in the theater or nudity of any kind.
7. No water or squirt guns. Dampness creates serious
cleaning problems in the theater that we'd rather not deal with.
Directions
You will find directions to our theater and some maps indicating where we're
located below. The actual address of the theater is as follows:
411 Newark Shopping Center
Newark, DE 19711
- Directions from anywhere along I95
- Take I95 to Delaware exit 3, 273 west.
- Follow 273 (Ogletown Rd) west for about 3 miles. It will become
Main Street, which is one way. That intersection is Kirkwood Highway
(Rt 2), remember it for the return directions.
- Follow Main St for about 1 mile.
- Turn right into the Newark Shopping Center.
The entrance is just past Jammin Java's wooden deck.
If you miss it, there's a second entrance about 50 yards further.
- The theatre will be at the far end of the shopping center.
- Return directions back to I95
- Go out the back exit from the shopping center.
It's on your right as you walk out of the theatre.
- At the exit turn right onto Chapel St, going north.
- Go under the railroad bridge.
- At the first light, turn right onto Cleveland Ave.
- At the second (or third?) light, turn right onto Kirkwood Highway (Rt 2). It's the first intersection with trees on the other side.
- Immediately cross to the far left lane.
- At the first light, turn left onto Ogletown Road (Rt 273).
- Follow 273 for 3 miles, there will be large green signs for I95.
- Directions from Baltimore, avoiding the toll
- These are more complicated, and maybe slightly slower,
but avoid a $2 toll at the Delaware border.
- Take I95 north to exit 109b, 279 North to Newark DE.
This will put you on Elkton Rd.
- Follow Elton Road into Delaware.
- Get in the left lane.
- Elkton Road will make a forced 45 degree right turn and become
Delaware Avenue. Delaware Ave is one way.
- Turn left at Burger King, onto Chapel St North.
- Go straight through the light at Main St.
- Turn right into the back entrance to the shopping center.
There will be a graveyard across the street. The railroad
overpass is just past the turn.
- Return directions back to Baltimore, avoiding the toll
- These are actually easier than the generic return to I95
instructions. But would add a toll if you were going north.
- Go out the front exit from the shopping center, at the
other end from the theatre.
- At the exit turn right onto Main Street (it's one way).
- Get in the left lane.
- After you pass a large parking garage on the left, Main St will
fork three ways. Take the far left fork onto Elkton Road south.
- After about three miles, there will be large green signs for I95.
Our theater is located at the position of the red star on the maps below:
